Clackmannanshire Council have launched a project to give every primary school pupil 1.5hours of PE a week from a specialist teacher. The head teachers have reported improved
classroom concentration as well as increased fitness.
In Aberdeen officials are starting school 20 minutes earlier to see if it brings about improvements in pupils’ concentration. Glashieburn Primary School will start at 0840 instead of 0900 and
finish at 1500. The idea being that children can concentrate longer in morning.
Both of these ideas seem good, but I thought most schools already had something similar in place. Certainly we do. School for us starts at 8:45 and finishes at 3:15, with time for 3 sessions in the morning. I’ve included a copy of the KS2 timetable below. We have 2hrs of PE per week, 1hr being taught by a secondary specialist teacher (for years 5 and 6). All classes have another session taught by us with a fully qualified coach supporting. Maybe we’re just ahead of the game?
Timetable for the KS2 day:
8:45 School starts
9:00 Lesson 1 (Numeracy)
10:15 Assembly
10:30 Playtime
10:45 Lesson 2 (Literacy)
11:45 Lesson 3 (Guided Reading)
