Several months ago I downloaded two Percy Parker songs from
teachingideas.co.uk which were designed to help children with their
times tables. The songs really got my children enthuastic about the tables on our Maths day and since then we’ve used them quite a bit. However some of the words didn’t go down well with my head. I let the author of the songs, ANdrew Holdsworth, know and now the lyrics have been toned
down.
He contacted me while I was away to let me know that he has finished off the series and released a CD with the full set on (which I was lucky enough to preview before hand!). The songs
have also been used to make a workbook and whiteboard software which is
going to be available from Sherston Publishing Group on the 4th
September.
According to Andrew, the director of the biggest educational music distributor in the USA
said that they were the best maths songs she’d ever come across! I have to agree – they certainly beat the Carol Vorderman ones hands down!
You can find out more about the CD
and / or the software, by going to www.percyparker.com, where you can
also listen to snippets of the tracks and order the CD.
I highly recommend getting a copy of this CD (especially for the older children) and the relevant worksheets. A great way to get your children learning their tables in their mental starter or just to put on in a spare few minutes. I’m really looking forward to using these in the classroom. What I
like is about the songs is they managed to get the attention of my Year 6
children last year (and hopefully this year) as much as the younger ones.
