Here is a copy of my mailing list message for those who do not subscribe…
Hi again,
After a year of work, the new version of Welcome to the Web is now online. The site, which helps users to learn about the Internet and the World Wide Web, has been completely rewritten and redesigned with a huge collection of new features…
- Updated content… describing and explaining many new online tools.
- A new look – the last redesign was in 2001, so this was long overdue!
- A brand new ‘Staying Safe Online’ section, which replaces the out-of-date ‘Guestbooks’ section.
- Speech (to support lower ability readers), recorded by the fantastic Richard Vobes (listen to his podcasts at www.vobes.com).
- More interactive features, including ratings, comments, music, video and more!
- Review sections (to allow users to assess what they remember from each section).
- Information about copyright… encouraging pupils to question if it’s OK to copy text and other information without asking.
- PIN codes on every page, so pupils can jump back to where they finished, if they don’t complete a section within their lesson time.
- An updated ‘Challenge’ to test what has been covered in the other sections of the site… with wonderful cartoon pictures by my fiancée!
- A new address – www.w2tw.co.uk – which is quicker and easier for little fingers to type!
Thank you to EVERYONE who has helped with the update to ‘Welcome to the Web’, especially to those people who took the time to fill in my survey last year. Your suggestions were extremely useful, and I tried to include as many of them in the new site, as I could. I know that many teachers may have already planned to use the original site over the coming weeks, so this is still available at www.teachingideas.co.uk/welcome/ – but please consider using the new site… it’s much better!
Teaching Ideas has also received a number of new ideas recently, including the addictive game ‘Name that Note‘. Have you played it yet?
I hope that the sites are useful. Please keep sending contributions to Teaching Ideas… I’ll be adding more very soon!
Best wishes,
Mark Warner
